Wait for Mycen (purple man) to speak to Alm. When Mycen is done, head east and speak to Ruka (red man blocking the exit). After Ruka’s speech, go back to the westernmost house and speak to Mycen. After that, leave the house and speak to Ruka again; he will join Alm. Speak to each of the three villagers (Grey, Robin, Cliff); all three will join Alm as well. Grey has red hair/purple clothes, Robin has purple hair/blue clothes, and Cliff has brown hair/red clothes.

Leave the village when you’ve spoken to all four characters.

Battle 1: Ram Woods

Ram Woods Map

Enemy Level #
Bandit 1 1

Ram Woods is your first battle. Let the villagers and Ruka get the kills, as Alm doesn’t promote until Chapter 4. Make sure that nobody takes too much damage; moving on trees also reduces the enemy’s chance to hit.

As you fight the enemy, notice that Alm and Ruka each inflict 8 damage per hit. Grey inflicts 7 damage per hit, and Robin and Cliff each inflict 5 damage per hit. The only difference between Robin and Cliff is that Robin can attack twice, while Cliff can only attack once. Letting Cliff get at least two kills is a good idea.

When you’re done, head east.

Battle 2: Thief Forest

Thief Forest Map

Enemy Level #
Bandit 1 6
Archer 1 1

Enter the roster (ならびかえ or narabikae) before advancing. Put Cliff in slot three (below Ruka), and Cliff in slot five (below Robin); this is so Cliff won’t be attacked as often, since his speed is about the same as the Bandits.

Now you face a new type of soldier: an archer. Archers generally attack at a distance with bows, although in this game, they can also walk up to melee range and attack.

Send Ruka to deal with the archer, and the villagers to fight the bandits. Alm can still hang back; use him only as emergency backup.

In all, just make sure your units don’t take too much damage, and let Cliff get in some kills.

When you’re done, save and move north to the thief shrine.

Battle 3: Ram Valley

Ram Valley Map

Enemy Level #
Bandit 1 7
Bandit 3 1
Archer 1 1
Mercenary 4 1

You now get to face a new enemy unit called the mercenary. Mercenaries wield swords into battle and are faster and more skilled than ordinary bandits. The mercenary in this map has a Leather Shield equipped; the Leather Shield reduces damage taken from physical attacks by 3. Also, one of the bandits has a higher level than the others; he’s the one sitting on the healing square in the fort.

Ruka, Grey, and Cliff should move east, forming a barrier to keep the bandits from attacking Alm or your weaker characters.

After 2-3 turns, the first bandits arrive and attack the barricade. If they move on trees or mountainous terrain, move away and let them chase you, as it will be very difficult to hit someone on those kinds of terrain. Alm and Robin should be kept as backup to finish off weakened units, while Silk should be used for emergency healing.

Move quickly to the healing fort in the northeast, as the mercenary cuts a path through the western mountains and you don’t want him to target Silk or your weaker characters. Alm and Ruka should form a barrier below the fort’s entrance, thus keeping the mercenary from being able to move to the healing square.

Alm should take the brunt of the damage, and let either Silk or Ruka finish the mercenary. Whoever kills him gains the fallen foe’s Leather Shield. Give it to Silk if she doesn’t have it, save, and move north.

Or you can use the following alternate strategy provided by Sevr:

Have Alm around level 3 and send him north with Silk into the rocks, and send everyone east. Have Alm fight the merc and healing him when necessary, and draining the merc when Alm is high on health.

Battle 4: Thief Shrine

Thief Shrine Map

Enemy Level #
Bandit 1 5

Move north and enter a battle. Send Ruka and the villagers forward, and let Alm hang back as backup. This battle is easy, just like the two previous.

When you’re done fighting, proceed north to the angel statue room and talk to the red-robed woman. She will join your party.

When you’re done, save and move east.

Battle 5: Southern Fort

Southern Fort Map

Enemy Level #
Soldier 1 6
Archer 1 1

Yet another new unit type: the soldier. Soldiers are lance-equipped units with balanced stats all around. They are also tougher than those bandits you fought a while ago. It is also worth noting that the enemy archer on this map has a Steel Bow. This gives him +3 attack power, and at your level, things can get real dangerous real fast.

Move everybody north to the fort’s entrance in a tight formation, with your high-defense characters up front. Send your villagers towards the western tower to deal with the soldier on the healing square, while Silk remain by the western tower to attack the soldier in the western tower with her Resire spell. Have Alm and Ruka go to the eastern tower to take down the archer.

Once you’ve defeated the tower guards, move to the fort entrance, where the remaining soldiers are, and take them down with Ruka and Silk.

When you’re done, move east into the fort’s tower. Go west to the cell where a pink-haired woman is being held and speak to her. She will join your party.

Exit the cell and head into the room with the large table. Find the treasure chest and open it to receive a Thunder Sword.

The Thunder Sword is a sword that attacks with Thunder magic and as such, it is blocked by Resistance rather than Defense. You can also use it to attack at a distance. Give this to Alm, since he’ll need it. Also, put the Steel Bow you just got into storage.

When you’re finished, exit the tower, save the game, and head back to the thief shrine to level up your characters (except Alm). Repeat the battle until Claire is level 12, Silk is level 8, and everybody except Alm is level 11. Don’t worry about leveling Alm yet.

When everyone has reached the targeted level, head north to the angel statue room. Touching the angel statue allows you to promote characters into new classes (Knight, Soldier, Mercenary, Archer, or Mage) or improved forms, such as the Armor Knight, Sniper, Sage, or Falcon Knight, to name a few. And some classes can promote twice…

The lion’s heads beside the statue allow you to improve one of a character’s statistics (MHP, Str, Skl, Spd, Luck, Def, or Res), though I’ll admit that I did not use them at all.

I would promote Ruka and Claire, change Grey into a mercenary, Robin into a knight, and Cliff into a mage.

When you’re done, save and move to the fort, then move north.

Battle 6: South Sofia 1

South Sofia 1 Map

Enemy Level #
Soldier 1 7
Archer 1 1
Knight 1 1

The horse unit in the northwest corner is called a knight. Knights are similar to the Cavalier/Social Knight class of other Fire Emblem games. They also have balanced stats, but also high movement power (of 7).

Since it’ll be a while before the knight can reach your forces, send Alm, Ruka, Grey, and Cliff north towards the healing fort to fight the soldiers. Robin, Claire, and Silk can hang back and mop up any survivors.

When you’re done, save and head north.

Battle 7: South Sofia 2

South Sofia 2 Map

Enemy Level #
Knight 1 6

Today, we shall be learning a new formation known as the “Parentheses.” Basically, six people form a “shell” on the outside, three to the west, and three to the east. Safely enclosed within are ranged attackers or weaker characters.

Form your characters like this:

Grey Robin
Alm Silk Claire
Ruka Cliff

Grey northwest, Robin northeast, Ruka southwest, Cliff southeast, Alm due west and Claire due east, with Silk in the center. Leave a space inside open so that Silk can heal/cast Resire as needed.

Head northwest towards the bridge in that formation. Let the enemy come to you and beat ’em down. If any of them head to the forts in the north, move across the bridge and assemble in “Parentheses” as quickly as possible

When you’re done, save and move west into the shrine (Liberation HQ).

When inside, speak to the blue-clothed man at the entrance (Payson), then proceed north.

Battle 8: Liberation HQ

Liberation HQ Map

Enemy Level #
Zombie 1 8
Skeleton 1 2

This is the first time you face monsters, undead creatures reanimated by dark magic (?). Zombies have the worst statistics of any class in this game, and are easily killed by most attacks. On the other hand, Skeletons possess better attack strength and defense, so magic is ideal for dealing with them.

Form everyone with high defense around the southern exit, protecting your weaker characters such as Silk, and destroy them all.

When you’re done, proceed further north. Speak to the blue-clothed man (Cleve) and to the red-clothed man (Folce); both will join your party.

Exit the shrine. Be sure to talk to Payson again before you go; he too will join.

On occasion, you may receive a Steel Shield by defeating a zombie. If you receive this shield, give it to Silk, and give her Leather Shield to Grey.

When you’re done, save and move east to the Sofia castle gate.

Battle 9: Sofia Gate

Sophia Gate Map

Enemy Level #
Tozeh (Baron) 1 1
Schrader (Paladin) 1 1
Knight 1 6
Soldier 1 2
Archer 1 5
Armor 1 1
Sorcerer 1 1

This is your first tough battle. You also get to face your first magic-wielding opponent, a sorcerer. Unlike your mage, who can cast elemental magic such as Fire, sorcerers cast special dark spells. Your physical units cannot block magic as effectively as a physical attack.

You also take on a couple of promoted units, an armor knight and a paladin. Armor knights are promoted from soldiers, with thick plates of armor to increase defense. Physical attacks will have little effect on such opponents. Paladins are promoted forms of knights, with better stats and +1 movement power. Your first “boss,” Schrader, is a paladin.

Now, have Claire fly to the western tower to keep watch and move everybody to the eastern bridge. When everybody has crossed or is about to cross that bridge, organize your force in a line, in this order:

Alm (first in line)
Ruka (high defense)
Cliff (good defense, attack at extended distance with Thunder)
Folce
Grey
Cleve
Robin (brings up the rear)

Leave Claire on the western tower and Python by the eastern section of wall, sniping the Soldiers and Archers on the eastern tower. Silk should not move until everyone else (except Claire and Payson) have gone, as her defense is still low (even with the shield she’s wearing).

When everyone reaches the main entrance, put your force in this formation:

Ruca
Alm Cliff Folce
Robin Grey Cleve

Ruka on point, Alm and Robin flank west, Folce and Cleve flank east, Cliff and Grey in center; and advance north. By this time, Schrader the paladin and his cavaliers will move towards your army and attack.

Use high-defense characters to attack. Cliff’s magic and Alm’s Thunder Sword also work here.

When Schrader falls, Tozeh will flee the battlefield. Now you can mop up the remaining forces with little trouble. Now you can send Silk and Python to the center entrance with the bulk of your forces. Use Claire to defeat the sorcerer, while Cliff creams the armor. Everybody else can destroy any remaining resistance.

When you’re done, save and enter Sofia Castle.

In Sofia Castle, you can speak to the various people inside, if you wish. The man in the lower left corner tells you about a certain sword that can only be used by royalty, while the man in the lower right talks to you about the Knight Killer lance. As you can guess from the name of the weapon, the Knight Killer inflicts double damage upon knights and paladins. Open the treasure chest in the lower right corner to get the Knight Killer, and give it to Cleve.

When you’re done, head to the northwest staircase and “enter” the stairs. Speak to the purple man at the top center (Mycen).
